My buddy Dan and I had heard while working in Albany
that there were wrecks that were shore diveable In Burlington so we rented
some tanks and a flag and headed up there. We got to Burlington and
stopped in to Waterfront Diving Center to get the low down on the shore
diving. We quickly learned that the wrecks there are not really shore
diveable and as it was a week day at the end of the season no charters
were running. The folks at the shop did draw us a map to a place they said
had some interesting wall formations so we ended up at Thompson’s Point.
We geared up and got in the water just fine I fumbled
with my Camera as it was my first dive with it. We dropped down to about
20 feet and met some big Perch and a few pan fish and saw tons of Zebra
muscles covering everything. After about 20-25 minutes it suddenly got
very dark, the irrational part of my mind kicked in to high gear and said
OH CRAP IT’S CHAMP! (the local Loch ness legend) did I mention that we
were both newly minted Advanced Open Water divers and this was our first
dive on our own. But it wasn’t Champ instead I surfaced and saw that the
far side of the lake was hidden by a Fierce Thunderstorm so I got Dan’s
attention to join me on the surface and we high tailed it back to the exit
point and finished getting our gear off just as the storm passed!
BTW if you are in the area the general store at the
corner of Ferry Rd and Lake Rd has some of the best Maple Syrup, stop and
buy some. |
