Skagway and Alaska at last

I started the day by having breakfast in this cool little diner at the junction of the Alcan and the South Yukon Hwys. Then I headed south to Skagway. First I passed Emerald lake and it is really Blue. then I came to the old Venus Mill. This was way cool! Across the White Pass and in to Alaska at last! 49 states down, one to go. The road in to Skagway is intense, I cant even imagine having to haul one ton of stuff up it as the miners had to do. Unfortunately when I got to Skagway there were 4 cruse ships in port and the town was jammed. I grabbed some lunch and met a guy who was interested in the brush guard on my truck, He lived in western Alaska and was looking for a good bar for his truck. I noticed he had on a princess cruise line badge and I asked how he liked the cruse, I was surprised an Alaskan was on one. He said the same as always. I was a little confused by his comment, He saw this and then told me that he was the pilot for the inside passage and did this all summer, what a cool job. I poked around Skagway some but it was to crowded so I headed across the bay to the old site of Dyea but there wasn't much there to see so back to Skagway where I checked out the Cemetery, I then decided that I should head out and try to revisit Skagway on the way back home.

I drove up to Whitehorse and had no problem passing through customs on the way back. in fact the Canada customs guys and I talked about guns for a few minutes while traffic backed up about 15 cars deep behind me. I pulled in to the truck stop in Whitehorse and got a shower and then to the Wal Mart to sleep amongst the RV'rs there. I pulled in and parked and then looked at the pickup in front of me and I just started laughing, There were Denny and Helen again! it was 1:30 am and not dark at all as yesterday was the summer solstice.

Today's Map

Emerald Lake. Pretty but the bottom is all very mucky, not good for swimming.

In Alaska at Last, and alone at last too. Just as I pulled up here 3 convoys of Jeep tours from Skagway stopped almost 40 jeeps in all.
