Nevada Back roads

My friend Regina and I decided to head out of Reno and explore some of the hot springs in the desert. It is really easy to be in the middle of nowhere very fast in Nevada.

Here and below are a couple of shots of Pyramid lake as we approached it

Pyramid lake is a sacred place to the Paiute Indian tribe and their reservation completely surrounds the lake. not so long ago access to the lake and nearby hot springs was permitted but abuse by visitors and over fishing prompted the tribe to limit access, and rightly so in my opinion.

A better shot of Pyramid lake.

Some cool rock formations on the desert

In the very small town of Gerlach I saw this sign at the gas station and thought DUH! where else would the gas be available

One point of interest is that the burning man festival takes place not far from here

Above and below are some shots of the Playa north of Gurlach. The Playa is an ancient dry lake bed that is almost perfectly smooth and runs for about 30 miles in the direction we want to go but we didn't have large scale maps of the area and didn't want to get off the trails on the plays because some spots that look solid can be very soft and muddy and once you get off the trail you will get stuck. Next time we will try the Playa route.

One of the hot springs has a few geysers around it. This was one of the best areas to soak but it has been sold to a large corporation that put a very serious fence up around it so we didn't try to get in.

The things you find out in the desert! we hadn't seen another car , house or any sign of life for almost 60 miles and then we come upon this crazy collage of old license plates and a sign post. there is a story that the people up the hill here believe that aliens will come soon to take them up in their ship.
