On the road to Reno and Bonneville salt flats

After getting a few hours of sleep at a small truck stop just west of Laramie, WY I got up just before dawn and started driving again. It was my first night in the back of the truck and I definitely came to the conclusion that the air mattress I had planned to use is not going to cut it. It is great for a night or two but not two months.

Above and below dawn breaks over Wyoming and day 2 of my adventure. So far this doesn't feel too much different than all the other trips I have made across I80 and as usual I am pushing hard to get where I am going. Yesterday I made over 1000 miles and today I will finish the trip to Reno with another 900+ mile day.

I was pushing hard to make Reno by dinner time but I found out that everyone there was going to Sacramento for the afternoon and wouldn't be back until late evening so I decided to slow down and enjoy this trip some. I took the opportunity to go out to the Bonneville Salt flats. I couldn't drive out on to the flats because it was still very wet. in fact as I was driving down the access road there was a big tow truck pulling some rental vans out of the flats..

This little side trip was a real treat for me. I have been driving trucks past this spot for years all the while knowing that the historic race course was so close but so far. I have never tried to come out here because I have a long standing policy that I don't drive a truck in to a situation that I don't know how to get out of. Now that I have seen the end of this road I know that a big truck can be driven out here and turned around but don't stray off the road.

I got the urge to explore so I followed some 4 wheel tracks up in to the mountains as far as I felt comfortable. This is the view from up above the flats. This was a nice little test run and I found that my nice heavy tall CB antennas don't work so well in off road conditions. All the rocking while bumping along the off road track caused the lugs to strip out of the bottom of the antennas

The entire area was desolate except for this one Cacti in bloom.
